Discovering the Power of Internal Silence

Discovering the Power of Internal Silence June 3, 2024

Silence is a powerful and often overlooked aspect. When we are in a place of silence, it can be a profound spiritual discipline that draws us closer to God. In a world filled with noise and constant activity, this devotion explores the importance of internal silence, allowing for spiritual renewal in our lives.

Psalms 42:11 AMP‬

Why are you in despair, O my soul? Why have you become restless and disquieted within me? Hope in God and wait expectantly for Him, for I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.

Restless & Disquieted

In Psalms 42:11, King David addresses his soul, asking why it has become restless and disquieted within him. The term “disquieted” means to make a loud sound, like a hum, to be in great commotion or tumult, and most importantly, it means to clamor.

Let’s consider this: our soul can be clamoring, which means it will make a loud and confused noise, especially a loud, vehement shout or cause a racket.

A loud shout or hum in our soul causes us to grumble, murmur, and complain. Our murmuring and complaining come from a disquieted disposition. We can now see why King David commanded his soul to Hope in God. When we begin to look at and meditate on things on earth instead of on Heavenly affairs, we are open to having our souls in a place of becoming disquieted. Once this happens, the complaining, grumbling, and murmuring start internally in our souls but will begin to come out of our mouths.

Remember, Jesus taught us that it is not what goes in that defiles us; our defilement is internal. Our murmuring, grumbling, and complaining come from within us, specifically from our soul.

Matthew 15:11 KJV

Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

Your adversary, the devil, prowls like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. One area of our lives that the devil targets constantly is our minds. Our soul includes our mind, will, and emotions, so when our minds are under attack, our souls are affected. If our souls become unsettled, we may experience despair, leading to hopelessness, desperation, and distress, eventually resulting in depression and discouragement.

Silence & Stillness

As we search deeper into the scriptures, we find that the remedy for a troubled soul is to put our hope in God. When we hope in God, we must be patient, wait, and trust Him.

One aspect of silence is staying calm, maintaining composure, and remaining still, which is synonymous with having hope in God. When we have hope in God, our inner sense of quiet will help us maintain an outward calm. It’s all about the state of our souls.

God wants us to wait on him with expectation. When we have hope in God, it shows that we expect him to work miraculously in our lives, and we believe he can do the very thing we are hoping for. We wait internally in silence with a quiet expectancy from God.

Stillness

Three Tips for Discovering Internal Silence

  1. Repent for allowing your soul to enter into a place where you’ve stopped hoping in God, and if you are murmuring and complaining because of the disquietness of your soul, confess these sins to God and Repent!
  2. Pray to hope in God, with a quiet internal expectancy in the power of God.
  3. Keep our mind on things above, and focus on heavenly affairs.

Closing

Let us hope in God, wait in silence, and allow our souls to find internal rest and peace.

Philippians 4:8 AMP Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart].
