Within a Witch’s Garden… Mugwort

Within a Witch’s Garden… Mugwort July 31, 2024

Mugwort… Artemisia, Felon Herb, Naughty Man, Old Man, and Salior’s Tabacco, are but some of these enchanting herbs names. I love mugwort, as it enhances dreams, especially dreams of prediction, and the herb can be sewn into dream pillows for this reason as well. Or I enjoy mugwort brewed as a tea before a tarot reading, with a bit of wildflower honey to taste.

I use mugwort to consecrate tools of divination, especially my crystal ball and a black cauldron that I use for water scrying. I believe that mugwort’s association with sight may stem from a folk remedy used in protecting one’s eyesight. England and Germany both had customs on Midsummer’s Eve to protect one’s eyesight by gazing into the bonfire through a branch of mugwort. Poppets were filled with mugwort and then thrown into the blazing Midsummer bonfire, in order to vanish one’s wickedness. One can carry mugwort to increase lust and fertility, as well as preventing backaches,  disease, and madness…

Sprinkle the herb around your bed for astral travel, or place some near your divinational tools to increase their potency. It was also a sacred herb to the Druids, and to the moon goddess Diana, as it is most definitely a herb of the moon. Mugwort is said to be kept within the house to keep out ghosts and spirits, but I don’t wish to keep them out. I favor a mugwort cordial to sip as I go within my woods to play. This bewitching little brew helps one to see what lurks behind the veil… that is if you dare. Things to do in a witch’s wood.

Mugwort Cordial Recipe
1 clean quart canning jar and lid

Dried mugwort

Dried wild rose petals

Organic raw honey

Vodka

Fill the jar a little over half with the dried mugwort, then add the wild rose petals to make it 3/4 full. Add about a cup of the honey, then fill it up the rest of the way with the vodka. Stir well with a chop stick, then place the lid on tight. Label and date this cordial, and place it somewhere dark. Give it a good shake daily, and start this cordial on the full moon. When the full moon returns again the following month it is ready, strain and enjoy on ice.
