I’ve been embarrassingly silent about something I care a lot about: Palestine. The other day, I told someone that I wanted to stay as away as possible from the current events for my own mental health because of all the things that have been going on. However, it would be irresponsible on my part not to say at least something about it, I would be a hypocrite and would be lying to myself, trying to stay silent about something as serious as the horrors Palestinians are experiencing.
It should be unsurprising that I, coming from a Syrian family, stand with Palestine. I’ve always have. I’m not a expert on the topic, I don’t have all the answers, but I do not need either of those two to know that what Israel Jewish Extremist Terrorists, Zionist being part of them, has been doing for decades is inhuman, ethnically cleansing a whole country that was there before way long before they decided to found a new country.
For those who are not as familiar with the history behind this, here’s a short, quick, yet effective video about it:
Now, some might be wondering why I crossed out the name of that supposed country and government. I did it because it is not. In any case, it should be called occupied Palestine. This is not a conflict, or a difficult situation, or complex, or anything. It’s very simple: an extremist group stole land from a country and massacred its inhabitants to stablish a terrorist state that keeps killing, making fun of Palestine’s suffering, and trying to play the victims after recent events, declaring war to Palestine.
This is not a conflict. It is total erasure.
Claiming that “I want to understand better” or “I can’t have an opinion” is simply a lazy, lame excuse to justify indifference toward an inhuman massacre that has been going on for decades. There’s no opinion to have and nothing too complicated to understand: Palestinians are being obliterated from the face of Earth while people sing in support of this and mock this nightmare in viral trends.
The last thing I want to ask, for those who are still thinking about what to do: Would it be okay to make fun of the victims of the Holocaust? What about the victims of 9/11? Or the war in Ukraine? Those who were slaves and overworked to death? Women abused and killed by men who felt entitled to do as they pleased?
All those questions have the same answer.
It is no different when we ask “is it okay to make fun of and mock Palestinians? Is it okay that they’re being massacred?” We don’t need to “understand better”. We need to be human and know that it’s time to stand with Palestine. How? Sharing the truth, supporting nonprofits that help Palestine, boycotting brands and companies supporting their massacre, and showing up at events that support Palestinian people.
This has been going for WAY too long. Enough is enough.
