People that suffer from psychopathy or sociopathic personalities often end up committing crimes, hurting others and themselves. If these conditions, however, are mental health diseases then it would be implied that the individuals cannot help their personalities and therefore cannot help their actions. If this is truly the case, is there a heaven for these individuals?
The Iceman.
Richard Kuklinski, also known as the Iceman, was a notorious serial killer convicted for his crimes and sentenced to multiple life sentences. He has been the subject of several films, documentaries, and other cultural references. In an interview with a psychologist, he showed no remorse for his actions and discussed how he wished he could feel anything about the crimes he committed. He discussed how he had a terrible childhood with an abusive father and an unfeeling mother. He blamed his parents for causing him to have no feeling for others and no desires or goals in life. The psychologist described Kuklinski as having several personality disorders and not having a quality upbringing.
If the Glove Doesn’t Fit.
Recently, famed football hero turned actor turned assumed murderer OJ Simpson passed away after a battle with Cancer. He was not convicted of the double homicide he was accused of in the 1990s. Many people, however, seem to theorize that he did in fact commit those crimes. In recent years prior to his death, various television adaptations and documentaries came out exposing more details about the case that the general public may have been unaware of. So, knowing what we know now, will OJ Simpson go to Heaven?
As he was a successful football player it is also possible that his career led to undiagnosed brain damage. There is a condition called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, which is caused by repeated concussions. Sports such as Soccer and Football can cause concussions and thus lead to CTE. The problem with CTE is that there is currently no way to confirm a diagnosis on a living person. When a person has passed away, the brain be surgically analyzed to confirm a CTE diagnosis. Dr. Bennet Omalu, a renowned neuropathologist, discusses in an interview with NBC News that he would personally bet his medical license on the fact that Simpson did develop CTE. CTE has various symptoms such as impulsivity, impaired judgment, criminal behavior and mood disorders.
Sympathy for the Devil?
Let’s say that OJ Simpson did in fact have CTE, does this mean he can get a pass on his behavior and go to Heaven? What about the Iceman? Is he forgiven with the evidence of his personality disorders and poor upbringing? Will these individuals and those similar to them be given forgiveness by God, given they may not have been able to help their volatile lives? Should they be forgiven?
