30 years ago, Parent’s Day was signed into law as a day to celebrate and appreciate the role of parents in children’s lives. Moms have a day in May and dads in June, but parents are recognized together on the fourth Sunday in July. With Parent’s Day 2024 quickly approaching, here are 5 Bible verses to encourage you on your Christian parenting journey.

Christian Parents, God Strengthens You

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

Isaiah 41:10 NLT

Parenting can be filled with fear and discouragement. You don’t need to sit in that fear or discouragement though. God will strengthen you.

Call out to Him. Remind yourself of what He has already done and Who He is.

God Listens To Your Cries for Help

For he has not ignored or belittled the suffering of the needy.

He has not turned his back on them,

but has listened to their cries for help…

Our children will also serve him.

Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord.

His righteous acts will be told to those not yet born.

They will hear about everything he has done.

Psalm 22:24, 30-31 NLT

Psalm 22 is one of my favorite psalms for so many reasons. I love the clear parallelism to Jesus on the cross, but also how it hits the highs and lows.

The hope that “Our children will also serve him” and “hear about the wonders of the Lord.” Yes, so encouraging as a Christian parent.

God Shows You the Way of Life

I will bless the Lord who guides me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
I know the Lord is always with me.
I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.

No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.
    My body rests in safety.
For you will not leave my soul among the dead
or allow your holy one to rot in the grave.
You will show me the way of life,
granting me the joy of your presence
and the pleasures of living with you forever.

Psalm 16:7-11 NLT

Christian parenting has presented me with many moments of feeling lost and confused as to what to do, what to say, or sometimes what to even think.

This psalm assures us that God will guide us and show us the way of life, which includes joy!

Jesus Calls You Friend

I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!  This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

John 15:11-17 NLT

More joy in these verses, this time from Jesus.

We have many opportunities to lay down our lives as parents. This is love. Whether our kids recognize it in the moment or not, you are modeling Jesus’s sacrificial love to your children.

As an expression of His love for us, Jesus calls us friends. Wow, that has been one of my most treasured titles. I pray you will find comfort in knowing that you are a chosen friend of Jesus.

God Equips You

A benediction for you, a final good word for you to return to the ministry of your family. I love these verses for parents. It reminds us that it God that equips us all everything that we need to parent in His will.

Now may the God of peace—

who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus,

the great Shepherd of the sheep,

and ratified an eternal covenant with his blood—

may he equip you with all you need

    for doing his will.

May he produce in you,

through the power of Jesus Christ,

every good thing that is pleasing to him.

All glory to him forever and ever! Amen.

Hebrews 13:20-21 NLT
