It’s Elul: Are You Prepared To Meet Your King In The Field?

It’s Elul. The sixth month of the Hebrew calendar. Next month, Tishri, the Biblical Fall Feasts begin. Are you ready to meet your King in the field?

Elul: The King Is In The Field

It is said that, in ancient times, during the month of Elul, the King would leave his throne and the security of his palace and come down to the field. It was here everyone and anyone, regardless of class, dress or status, could approach him. Put simply, he met his people where they were and accepted them as they were. Sound familiar?

Elul: A Time of Repentance

Elul is also the month set apart for repentance (teshuvah in Hebrew) in spiritual preparation of the coming Fall Feasts that begin with the Feast of Trumpets (Yom Teruah in Hebrew, also known as Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish Civil New Year) on the first day of the 7th month of Tishri. Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement, follows ten days later, and then the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot in Hebrew) follows that.

There are ten days of Teshuvah that fall between the Feast of Trumpets and Yom Kippur, but the entire month of Elul is set aside for a similar experience known as Yemei Ratzon, or “Days of Favor.” It is believed it was during these days of favor that the Lord forgave the Israelites for their blatant idolatry in creating the Golden Calf. These days begin on the first day of Elul and culminates on Yom Kippur, the 10th day of Tishri, when it’s believed Moses descended from Mt. Sinai with the second set of tablets, after destroying the first upon seeing the Golden Calf.

We spend the days of Elul in quiet reflection of our lives, repenting of any trespasses we may have committed during the past year, and we focus on the King in the field – our King, Jesus, and His grace and forgiveness.

The Feasts All Point to Jesus

Just as the death, burial and resurrection of Christ are all fulfilled in the Spring Feasts of Passover, Unleavened Bread and First Fruits, the Fall Feasts also all point to Him, this time His magnificent and joyous return, His Second Coming.

Jesus’ second coming will be fulfilled in the Feast of Trumpets, when at the first blast of the trumpet, He will appear. His judgment pours out on the world on the Day of Atonement, and the wedding feast and beginning of the millennial reign are fulfilled in the week long Feast of Tabernacles.

In Conclusion

Hooray! It’s Elul. And just as the King left his throne and came to the people, our King – Jesus Christ (Yeshua HaMashiach) – has done the same, when He was born as a man to become Israel’s messiah, and will do so again when He leaves the Kingdom of Heaven to dwell with us in the New Jerusalem.

But even now He walks in the field, among His people, accessible and welcoming to all who seek Him and wish to approach Him.

It’s Elul. Are you prepared to meet the King in the field? In other words, are you prepared to be caught up in the air with Christ at the first trumpet blast of Yom Teruah?
