July 4, 1776
Independence Day occurred when thirteen colonies declared independence from Great Britain on July 4, 1776. This was meant to separate from a tyrant leader who gave little freedom to his people. “The Americans saw a pattern of increasing oppression and corruption happening all around the world” (quote from The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration).
According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of independent is to not depend on or not be subject to control by others. It is not affiliated with a larger controlling unit. And it is not looking to others for one’s opinion or guidance.
Independence has its importance. It boosts my self-confidence, gives me financial freedom, and establishes trust and accountability with friends and family. It also ignites a sense of adventure and curiosity in finding my place in this world.
However, a relationship with God is quite the opposite. He made us to be dependent on Him. “God, the one and only—I’ll wait as long as he says. Everything I hope for comes from him, so why not? He’s solid rock under my feet, breathing room for my soul, an impregnable castle: I’m set for life” (Psalm 62:5 MSG).” Apart from Him, we can do nothing” (John 15:5 TLB).
Dependence Benefits
Dependence on God comes with a plethora of benefits. He is our helper, we do not have to fear. He extends grace – and the Lord knows I need all the grace I can get! God keeps us good, honest, and humble. He’s a safe place. His plans for us are for a future and hope! He is our provider. God loves us so much, that He gave His only Son to die for us on the cross! No other leader in all of history ever did that!
On July 4, 1988, I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. This became my Dependance Day. It was a day I will never forget. Our youth group attended an evening retreat at Eagle Mountain Lake in Lake Worth, TX. After the pastor spoke, he offered an alter call and I walked to the front. I knew I wanted this Jesus he talked about and so with Fear and Anxiety by my side, I inched forward, not knowing my life would be changed forever.
Sorry Webster, but I was ready for God to take control of my life. I wanted, more than anything, to be affiliated with a “larger controlling unit.” Laying down my life that night, I gave God every part of me. I longed for His opinion and guidance and still do today.
I’m Not Turning Back
God is Love. He is kind, caring, and compassionate. He loves me. Provides for me and without him I can do nothing. God has strengthened my understanding, straightened my path, and quenched my thirsty soul. Forgiveness and Mercy stand at His side ready to embrace me. He declares my place in this world and gives me the means and talent to live with a purpose. And His Son’s death on the cross gave me freedom. He’s far from being a tyrant leader. So, why would I ever consider being independent of God?
This 4th of July, I hope you celebrate not only the freedom we have because of the sacrifice of our men and women in service, but also that Jesus was willing and has died for the freedom of your soul.
