Last Sunday I happened to see a car accident right alongside my car. I was parking outside church, when a driver misjudged how much space he had to pass another car, badly scraping and denting it.  Fortunately he was going slowly and no one was injured. I was just a few feet away with my car windows open, and thought to myself, “Oh no, here we go with the yelling and cursing and freaking out now.”   But that’s not what happened in this case.  I witnessed... Read more

The national suicide rate has focused our attention on signs to look for and how to reduce risks.  One stand out demographic that has a close to zero rate of suicide has been largely overlooked. Recent research has found that devout, practicing Catholic women are almost completely immune from the trend.  Catholic women who attend Mass more than once a week have a nearly non existent suicide rate. CDC statistics show alarming increases in suicide.  In 2016, nearly 45,000 Americans age 10 or older died by suicide. Suicide rates rose in... Read more

Cardinal McCarrick is accused of despicable things. In the 1990s when horrible allegations against Catholic priests became a media obsession, then-Cardinal Joseph Bernardin was accused of sexually abusing a minor seminarian during his previous tenure as archbishop of Cincinnati. Cardinal Bernardin was dragged through the mud, for months, and presumed guilty by the media, the public, and even many of his parishioners. Only after a year of torture did the truth come out.  His accuser admitted as he lay dying from Aids that he’d fabricated... Read more

In my work at a pregnancy care center, I’ve talked to numerous men who are the fathers of aborted children.   Father’s Day is a particularly difficult time for them. There are 55 million men in this country who bear the scars of abortion, men who need to share their stories to show others there’s a better choice. While there has been an increased focus on post abortion trauma in women, there is yet to be much discussion on the devastation men experience... Read more

This morning at Mass our pastor asked for prayers for a family in our parish.  He told us the situation of a couple expecting their fifth child.   Both parents and the four siblings had been excited for a new baby until doctors announced that Lisa has a medical condition that is making this pregnancy highly risky.  There’s a chance she could even die because of carrying the pregnancy... Read more
