Discovering the purpose of one’s life is one of the great existential pursuits. It is also thought of as one of the universal questions that every person faces when trying to manage their life. Whether Christian or non believer, we all want to know why we are here. There is no shortage of philosophies, religions, and organizations which seek to help us find the answer.
The bible is one source for finding out the answer to purpose that you may not have thought of. It is not just a book of rules and regulations, prayers and prophecies. It also deals with both the individual and mankind as a whole. It starts by letting us know that we as human beings were intended and made with purpose. You are not an accident to God. Recognizing this fact can be the difference between living a life of hope and positive motivation or one that is frustrated with confusion and despair.
What God Says About Your Purpose
God created us in His image. His original instructions included being fruitful and subduing the earth. But there is more. It involves getting to know God, His ways, and our future. It also concerns how we can put ourselves in line to enjoy God’s original purpose in creating mankind.
While Jesus Christ removed the curse of eternal death from the human family, he also came to set us free from the hold that destructive thought patterns and habits can have. He did this so that we can have a full life free from unnecessary suffering and doomed pursuits. He came so that we could live a life that is fruitful and win the race.
While we are here, we do well to align our life with God’s purpose of supporting life, caring for our neighbors, developing our talents, and upholding the sovereignty of God’s name in our lives and heart. While much of what we do seems mundane, our purpose in general is to praise our creator and share with others about his ways. Thus, it might seem surprising that the second wisest man on earth, Solomon, could conclude that all else pursued is vanity.
Outside of sharing the good news with others, we are free to develop our innate talents to the degree that they garner for us positive fruitage that can include wealth and fame. You can have confidence that the dream given to you is because you have the ability to fulfill it.
You Matter as an Individual to God
Most who wonder about their purpose in life are often also questioning their self worth. Are we worth the dreams in our heart and do we have a right to desire such things? God indicates in his word that He knows we will have individual goals. He says if we share our plans with him, He will help us to establish them.
No one can tell you who you are, what you want, and that your goals are without meaning. The precautions set out in the bible against chasing riches for riches sake are for our protection. Yet, you are valuable and unique in the world – even your individual hairs are numbered by God. The faith you have about who you are and your purpose or plans for your life were given to you according to your abilities.
A Dystopian Future is Not What’s Ahead
While many expect that without God a dystopian future is at hand, Christians know and expect something different. God is not a man that He should lie. All that He says in His word will come true. So we can expect a future in which our full potential is fulfilled. We can begin now by perfecting our abilities and developing the Christian personality.
Becoming familiar with the bible, what it says about how God views us individually, and how he cares for us individually will give us a deep seated confidence to pursue the goals and dreams He has given us while being sure to pursue our purpose of sharing God with others.
