This year, 2024, the story of The Exodus is even more powerful than on a regular Passover, as once again our people find themselves captive. We can hear our G-d saying, “Let my people go,” as we struggle to bring home the hostages. Are we reliving The Exodus story in 2024?
Israel Enslaved
Surprisingly, there are a lot of similarities between events happening this year and what happened in the story of The Exodus. During the Exodus, The Jewish people were slaves in Egypt. Today many of our people again are being held captive by a foreign force, in Gaza. Is G-d saying to our enemies, “Let my people go?” Are we reliving The Exodus?
Are We, The United States, Reliving The Exodus?
In recent years, many of the events of the Biblical story have happened, especially in one country, The United States. Why would plagues hit the US instead of Gaza? It is a good question. The United States has in recent years provided less support to Israel, with Biden recently calling for a cease-fire. Is G-d calling on the world superpower to “Let my people go?”
Water Turned To Blood
The story of the plagues in Egypt begins when Moses turns the Nile to blood and all the fish die. A similar event has been worsening in the southern US. In 2018 4 million pounds of fish were killed in a red tide event in Florida. Red tides have continued to be an ongoing issue since, with hundreds of dead marine animals washing ashore in Florida in 2021.
Are We Reliving The Exodus With Frogs?
As if blood-red waters and dead sea mammals coming ashore weren’t enough of a plague, the next year in 2019 Flordia was infested with thousands of poisonous Cane Toads. It just so happens that the second plague in the Exodus story is the plague of the frogs. Egypt became infested with frogs and the Pharoh begged Moses to appeal to G-d to stop the plague.
Gnats and Flies! Oh My!
These blood-red water and frogs are followed in the Biblical text by the plague of the gnats. The story says all of the dust in Egypt turned to gnats and landed on the people and animals. In 2022 Chicago experienced an unusually large swarm of gnats for which scientists had no explanation. Pictures shown here show the entire skyline filled with gnats.
Next, flies came upon Egypt. The Biblical text says flies ruined the land. Also, in 2022 the invasive Chinese native lanternfly invaded at least 12 US states. This fly ruins crops. By sucking the nutrients out of the crops while feeding, the fly kills the plant.
Dead Cattle
When none of the other plagues worked, G-d killed the Egyptian’s livestock. In 2022 in Colorado over 41 cattle mysteriously dropped dead at the same time. There was no evidence of a wildlife attack.
Boils
Next, the people of Egypt developed boils on their skin. While I cannot find any evidence of increased cases of boils in the US, cases of measles have increased so much that in 2024 the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a risk to the elimination of measles. Like the boils of the Biblical plague, measles causes festering sores on the skin and causes the afflicted to become ill.
Does Hail Mean We Are Reliving The Exodus
Next in Egypt, hail and thunderstorms destroyed crops, killed people, and damaged property. That brings us to the present-day US. Just a week before the eclipse, powerful thunderstorms with hail moved across the US starting in TX and moving eastward. Several tornados were reported in different states, two deaths were reported, and there was massive damage done to property.
Locust
In Egypt, the next plague was the plague of the locust. This has not happened yet in the US, but it is predicted to occur in the US this summer. Two separate groups of cicadas are emerging at the same time. This is a rare occurrence which has not happened since 1803.
Eclipse
After the plague of the Locust Egypt was plunged into darkness for three days. In the US the darkness came before the locust, but both still came. The US experienced a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. The darkness however only lasted seconds not days.
Will We Relive The Exodus With The Plague of The First-Born Son
So, are we reliving The Exodus? Having examined all of the plagues we can see that the US has experienced all the plagues ancient Egypt experienced except one. We have yet to see a plague that murders all our firstborns. However, clearly, we have been warned. Hear what G-d says before the final plague descends. “Let my people go!” We must support Israel, free the hostages, and have no second thoughts about our allegiance. When we made an alliance with Israel, we allied with G-d himself. That is not an alliance easily broken. “Let my people go, Biden!!”
Earthquakes
It is widely believed by many biblical scholars that an earthquake triggered the events of The Exodus. Just before the eclipse on April 5, 2024, an Earthquake hit New York and left the Statue of Liberty shaking. This came just days after the statue had been hit by lightning. G-d is talking, but are we listening?
Coincidence?
Some will say these are all naturally occurring phenomena, and they will be right. There will always be insects, animal deaths, earthquakes, red tides, illness, and strange migrations. Yet, how often do all these things happen in the same country at the same time? This is the first time all these have occurred simultaneously since the Biblical plagues. Make no mistake history does repeat itself. G-d does still talk. This is no coincidence. G-d is sending his messenger to say, “Let my people go!” Will we hear him before it is too late?
Conclusion: Are We Reliving The Exodus?
The United States is reliving The Exodus and in this story we are Egypt. We must repent and honor the alliance that we made with Israel and with G-d himself. We must bring the hostages home and answer his call to, “Let my people go,” or it will soon be our sons dying. This year as we celebrate Passover, I am grateful that G-d is still G-d, and he still shows up for his people. The Exodus is not just a history or a story. It is a living ever unfolding love and protection of G-d for his people. When Israel cries out G-d answers the call.
